Beverly Hills

Few cities are decorated with trees as iconic as the palms of Beverly Hills.

Swaying gently above the historic buildings and posh retail outlets, they lend the city an exotic aura consistent with the glamour of the town. Together with a diverse collection of broad-leafed deciduous trees and evergreen conifers, these palms help comprise an impressive urban forest.

Beginning with the Green and Cook Community Plan of 1906, the City of Beverly Hills has carefully planned the local urban forest. Originally, a single species was planted on each street, thereby providing a unique feel to each. However, before long, many of these species proved unsuitable for the local climate or susceptible to disease. As these problematic trees are removed, they are put to good use – some are recycled locally, while others are converted into wooden benches, which are then made available to local citizens.

In 1996, the city council approved Phase I of the Street Tree Master Plan. Among other things, the plan identified replacement species for various portions of the city. In many instances, the replacement species were selected to avoid or rectify problems that occurred with the original installations. For example, Chinese elms (Ulmus parvifolia) were selected in part for their resistance to Dutch elm disease, while crepe myrtles (Lagerstroemia spp.) were selected to replace species that outgrew small spaces.

Today, a rich, diverse community of trees provides shade for the city and charm for the citizens. In fact, Beverly Hills has been recognized as a “Tree City USA,” for each of the last 30 years.

Despite the fact that most of the city’s street trees hail from exotic locations, Beverly Hill’s urban forest includes numerous species native to California. Moreover, the city values these native species enough to provide them with legal protections. Sixteen of the region’s native species derive protection from the city’s tree ordinance, including California junipers (Juniperuscalifornica), blue oaks (Quercus douglasii), California bays (Umbellularia californica) and bigleaf maples (Acermacrophyllum).

Additionally, the tree ordinance of Beverly Hills affords protection to all trees with a d.b.h. (diameter at breast height) of more than 48 inches. To remove such trees – or any grove of trees growing on private property – residents must acquire a permit from the Beverly Hills Building and Safety Department. The City of Beverly Hills maintains all of the street and park trees in the city, as well as all others located on public property.

Even with sound planning and appropriate maintenance, urban forests are dynamic systems that cause problems from time to time.
